Australian domain names use extensions managed by auDA, the industry body for the .au namespace. This guide explains the difference between the extensions, who can register them, and what they cost at WebFulHost.
The Australian extensions
| Extension | Who it's for | Typical requirement |
|---|---|---|
| .com.au | Businesses and companies | An Australian presence, such as an ABN/ACN |
| .net.au | Online businesses and networks | Australian presence and a connection to the domain name |
| .org.au | Non-profits and associations | Australian presence and a connection to the domain name |
| .au | Anyone (with restrictions) | Australian presence for many names; direct registrations |
Most Australian businesses choose .com.au because it's the extension Australian visitors trust and type automatically.
Eligibility is enforced
Unlike generic extensions, .com.au registrations are checked against eligibility rules. The person or business registering must have an Australian presence — an ABN, ACN, or another accepted identifier — and the domain name must be closely connected to that identity. Choose a name that clearly relates to your business name or activity, otherwise the registration can be challenged.
The newer .au direct namespace
In 2022 a new .au direct namespace opened, allowing short names like yourbrand.au without the .com. These are popular where the matching .com.au is already taken. Eligibility rules still apply to many .au names, and priority periods apply for names matching existing registrations.
Pricing and renewal
At WebFulHost, Australian domains register and renew at $14.99/year, and a domain is included free for the first year when you purchase an annual hosting plan. Renewals are billed one year at a time and you'll get a reminder before the renewal date. See How to Renew Your Hosting and Domain.
